Longtime orthodontists Dr. Matt Nisco of Fountain Valley and Dr. Chuck Carlson of Huntington Beach have decided to team up for a couple of very good reasons.
“We’re going to work together to provide better patient care and improved access,” Dr. Nisco said.
Dr. Carlson has purchased Dr. Nisco’s practice and will now have two locations serving both Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley.
“Nothing will change about the Fountain Valley office, other than being open more days for patient care,” Dr. Nisco said.
The two started talking about working together in 2019, but COVID put their plans on hold.
“Over the years, we’ve attended our orthodontic conferences together and perhaps learned as much from each other as we have from the lecturers while also becoming very good friends,' Dr. Nisco said.
Dr. Carlson, of Surf City Smiles, graduating Summa Cum Laude from UCLA with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery before completing his Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master’s Degree in Oral and Craniofacial Biology, also at UCLA.
“It’s an interesting full-circle story,” Dr. Carlson said. “Dr. Nisco was one of my instructors when I was completing my residency. Now, I’m happy to take over the reins and continue the great work he has been doing in Fountain Valley for 30 years.”
Dr. Nisco graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in biology, received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry, and his orthodontic specialty training at the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Nisco and his wife Mary, have four grown children: Philip, Julie, Marie, and Noelle, and are expecting their third grandchild in the fall.
They were involved in their children’s endeavors, from sports, to music, to arts to religious education as they grew up in Fountain Valley. His children still talk about swimming for Green Valley Swim Team.
The Nisco family is well known in Fountain Valley. Matt’s dad, Phil, has been a longtime member of the city’s Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities. Matt's sister, Terri Simes, has owned the premier Farmers insurance agency in Fountain Valley since the 1980's Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Carlson and his wife, Tara have a daughter, Bradyn, and “the world’s greatest dog,” McCoy, a golden doodle.
“McCoy is almost like a service dog. It’s funny how he gravitates toward nervous patients,” Dr. Carlson said.
Both orthodontists provide a full range of treatments from traditional metal braces to Invisalign clear aligners.
“We’re not going to change anything, except we’ll be working together,” Dr. Nisco said. “We’ll provide better care for our patients, and continue to focus on our family and community,” he added.
